Take a look inside Kelly and Zach’s Detroit Colony Club Wedding Reception
There is nothing quite as special as hosting a Colony Club wedding in Detroit. Nestled quietly among Detroit’s new high-rise apartment buildings and bustling entertainment district sits a street filled with hidden historic treasures. The Colony Club is one of those gems which is why we were so happy that Kelly and Zach selected this venue to host their own wedding.
History of the Colony Club
The Colony Club was designed by Smith, Hinchman, and Grylls to be an elite women’s club. In other words, a club for very wealthy women. The building itself is rich with history and ornately decorated, most of which still shines through to this day. It officially opened in 1929 right before the stock market crash that started the great depression. Although the stock market crash negatively affected the rest of the world immediately, the Colony Club continued to operate as a women’s club for a few years past the crash of 1929. In about 1935 the women’s club was no more and the Elks and American Legion moved into the building and took over until finally the Detroit and Wayne County Federation of Labor Union called it home until about 1964 when the city of Detroit listed it as a vacant property.
All wasn’t lost because around 1973 it became the home of the Detroit Police Academy. It appears that the Police Academy was the Colony Club’s longest resident because it wasn’t until 2002 when Forbes Management took over and revitalized the building to create the beautiful wedding and event venue that it is today.
Kelly and Zach chose wisely when they picked this venue to host their wedding reception. There are lots of hidden nooks and crannies in the building. Every time we work there we find each and every spot. We invite you to see our favorite Colony Club wedding photos below.
