Choosing wedding shoes may seem like a minor detail in wedding planning. The wedding day is filled with so many important details, including the dress, venue and of course the wedding cake. However, wedding shoes can be an essential part of the wedding day ensemble because they can set a tone for the entire look when worn on your wedding day and will be captured in your wedding photographs for years to come.

As wedding photographers, we see of all the drama that happens behind the scenes on the wedding day. About eighty percent of our brides complain that their feet hurt on their wedding day even though they thought they picked the perfect pair of wedding shoes. As your wedding day approaches, you will be faced with the challenge of picking out what shoes to wear. It's a difficult decision for some who want both comfort and style on their wedding day. Here are some tips that may help you pick the perfect wedding day shoe!

When selecting your wedding day shoes consider the ground you will be standing upon. Is your wedding taking place on grass? Light gravel or sand? If the ground is uneven, choose wedges. Wedges will provide more support for your feet and give a longer wear than flats as well. What about standing on stone for hours on end? Most historic churches and outdoor venues have stone floors and pathways, and it doesn't take long for your feet to suffer when standing on these surfaces. If you look down and see lots of stone at your venues, we recommend flats or sandals or at least having back up footwear nearby in case you experience discomfort.

If you don't want to sacrifice style for comfort, consider changing shoes throughout the day. That way you can have the comfort of a wedge or flat sandal most of the day, but change into a more stylish heel when it's time to take pictures.

Whichever pair of shoes you pick, about a month or two before the big day, break in new wedding shoes by wearing them around your house with thick stockings so they form perfectly to your feet.

The best advice we can give is to prioritize your comfort. The perfect pair of wedding day shoes will be the ones that don't cause you pain. Happy shopping!
